The Aldeburgh lifeboat was launched yesterday after a yacht with two people onboard got into difficulty south of the Suffolk coastal town.

After a request by the UK Coastguard, the all-weather lifeboat – called the Freddie Cooper – was launched at 4.20pm to reports of a six-metre catamaran which had lost its mast.

Once on scene, the Freddie Cooper transferred three crew aboard the catamaran and assisted in the recovery of the mast from the sea.

The mast was stowed securely before the catamaran was towed to Harwich, where it was met by the Harwich ILB which accompanied them to a safe mooring at Levington Marina.

The RNLI volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts.

The charity operates over 230 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland and has more than 140 lifeguard units on beaches around the UK.
