The announcement was made by wife Sandy Ruddock, who described him as a “huge character” who “swept everyone along on a wave of enthusiasm and goodwill”. He died on July 20 after a heart attack. He was 57.

Based in Earl Soham, near Framlingham, the multi award-winning firm was established by the husband-and-wife team in 2012.

Scarlett & Mustard uses local ingredients and its products are sold in more than 800 retail outlets in the UK, including Harrods, Selfridges, Fenwicks, and Harvey Nichols.

Mrs Ruddock, on behalf of the company, said: “It is with immense sadness that we announce the sudden death of Julian Pollard on July 20 whilst on holiday with his family in France.

“Julian, also known as Big Bear and Col. Mustard, was the co-founder of Scarlett & Mustard with his wife Sandy Ruddock.

“They started the business together in 2012, and it now supplies sweet and savoury condiments and dressings to the UK market and abroad.

“Julian, who made Suffolk his home, was a huge character in every way, a bon viveur, passionate foodie, rugby player and an excellent shot.

“He touched the lives of many people, and he will be sorely missed. His wife Sandy has said that she and her team at Scarlett & Mustard will continue to grow the business that he loved so much, and it will be their mission to carry it on as his legacy.”

Mrs Ruddock and Mr Pollard, who served in the Royal Anglian Regiment, married in 2010 and set up home in Suffolk with their combined family of five children, three dogs, two cats, and 15 chickens.

Mrs Ruddock added: “He was incredibly positive. He swept everyone along on a wave of enthusiasm and goodwill.

“He was the only person I know who would respond to a buyer asking him how he was ‘fat, drunk and stupid’. He was funny, kind, impatient, absolutely committed, and never did anything by halves.”

Scarlett & Mustard won three awards at the 2016 EADT Food and Drink Awards, including Small Business of the Year.

A service of thanksgiving will take place at Framlingham Church on Friday, September 29.
