New Leiston goalkeeper Marcus Garnham wants to help the Blues reach the Isthmian Premier Division play-offs.

The experienced stopper was relegated from the division with AFC Sudbury at the end of last season, but will stay at that level, having joined Glenn Driver’s side.

In contrast to Sudbury, Leiston were battling at the top end of the division, narrowly missing out on the play-offs, and Garnham hopes he can help the team go at least one step further next term.

“They were there or thereabouts last season and it would be nice to take that next step and push them on to the next level,” said Garnham, who has also played for Bury Town and Lowestoft Town at Isthmian Premier level.

“I spoke to Glenn (Driver) and he wants to go one step further and be competing to get in the play-offs.

“It won’t be easy as there are some tough teams at that level but I am confident we can do well, having made some good signings to add to the team that was here last year.”

Garnham is one of five new faces at Victory Road, following Lowestoft Town duo Rob Eagle and Dominic Docherty, Maldon & Tiptree defender Kyle Hammond and returning striker Christy Finch, who enjoyed a brief but prolific spell at Norwich United last season.

Out of the club have gone Gareth Heath, Joe Francis, Niko Muir, Ade Cole, Ollie Brown and Ashlee Jones, but there are still a number of familiar faces known to Garnham at the coastal club.

“I know Seb (Dunbar), Bully (Tom Bullard) and Jack Ainsley, while I was with Rob Eagle at Lowestoft, who is a Leiston boy, and he is buzzing to have signed for the club,” Garnham added.

Dunbar and Bullard formed part of a consistent back-line last season that also included Joe Jefford, Jake Hutchings and the aforementioned Brown.

“JJ (Jefford) and Bully (Bullard) are great defenders, I played with Bully for five or six years at Bury and he is a formidable player, while Seb is combative and competitive,” Garnham enthused.

Meanwhile, the Blues have announced the appointment of Terry Fenwick as their commercial manager.

Fenwick spent five years as Ipswich Wanderers’ chairman and was recently part of the backroom staff at Needham Market.
