Part of prestigious independent Woodbridge School is set to be converted to housing as part of major changes to the site.

The private school, part of the Seckford Foundation, is to move its pre-prep department Queen’s House from the main site, in Burkitt Road, to The Abbey, its prep school in Church Street, so that the infant and junior pupils are located together.

Proposals are afoot to increase and improve facilities for teaching, music and sports at The Abbey.

Meanwhile, an application has been submitted to Suffolk Coastal council for the Queen’s House building – to convert the 102-year-old property into six homes with 26 more built in its grounds. The 32 homes will comprise three one-bed and two two-bed flats; and six two-bed, 14 three-bed and seven four-bed houses.

Neil Tetley, head of Woodbridge School, said: “The aim of bringing the younger pupils together at The Abbey, with wonderful new facilities, will be to enhance the experience for all pupils and promote a stronger ethos from nursery to Year 6.”

Queen’s House will no longer be needed by the school and would be sold for residential use which is “sympathetic to its surroundings and in keeping with the heritage values of the school”.

Planning assessments submitted to Suffolk Coastal say Queen’s House is not listed and little original detail remains internally.

The sale of Queen’s House will enable the investment in new facilities at The Abbey – which was the original country house of Thomas Seckford, a lawyer in the court of Elizabeth I – to move forward.

Plans include a complete refurbishment and redecoration of classrooms, increasing on-site parking for parents and building a new multi-purpose activity hall and Astroturf sports pitch. A new nursery school is also in the proposal.
