Supermarket giant Tesco has already committed to occupy the largest of four retail spaces, being built on redeveloped land opposite the existing Waitrose store in Church Street, and will arrive in the middle of next month to begin fitting out the store - a process due to take about three months.

Developers expect construction on the remaining commercial units to be completed by April and are in talks with a number of other firms interested in taking up the spots.

Reef Estates Ltd, which sealed planning permission in April 2010, also revealed an inclination to accommodate a coffee shop in one of the units but contradicted rumours of a fast food chain moving in.

Stewart Deering, company director, said: “We expect Tesco to start fitting its unit out in the middle of March.

“The whole development is progressing well and we have started to market the other units. There has been good initial feedback and we are confident of there being a mixture of retail uses.” Details of the new occupants will be revealed upon approval.
